ABIS Cloud Trends: Part 2

Agencies once were concerned about losing control of their biometric data. They said it felt good to be able to touch and see your servers, run by your staff, as evidence your data is safe and secure. However, today’s cloud ABIS customers tell ABC this “challenge” is mostly “in our heads” and is no longer relevant to today’s technology.

Cloud operations do require safe, secure, and guaranteed “Connection and Protection.” Connection means consistent, real-time, secure access to your data. Protection includes both physical and digital security and accountability. Therefore, to ensure Connection and Protection, cloud ABIS users must provide for all of the following:

  • Data Availability. Your mission-critical cloud data must guarantee availability 24x7, with real-time response built into the service agreement.

  • Data Security. Your storage solution must follow FBI CJIS Security Policy, which addresses data protection for cloud-based deployments.

  • Data Ownership. Your data must be contractually yours. The IACP "Guiding Principles on Cloud Computing in Law Enforcement" includes sample contractual language.

  • Data Integrity. Your solution must include an audit trail for each record, to confirm a clear and precise chain of custody for your digital evidence.

  • Data Assessment. Your solution should be periodically tested to demonstrate usage, accuracy, and security status, and accommodate any changes to agency operations. Special test sets may be designed to ensure search accuracy and throughput/response time consistency.
